Midlife metabolism myths
Ever blamed your slowing metabolism for those extra pounds creeping in? Turns out, science says otherwise. A Duke University study looked at metabolism from 8 days old to 95 years old age and found that between 20 and 60, your metabolism stays pretty consistently the same. It doesn’t start to drop off until after 60, and even then, it’s very gradual. If weight gain is happening in your 30s, 40s, or 50s, it’s more about lifestyle, stress, and what’s on you're eating rather than than a metabolic mystery. The good news? Staying active and eating well keeps your engine running smoothly, no magic fixes needed. Read more on this study here.
That all being said we know that for a minority, metabolism isn’t as simple as “calories in, calories out.” Hypothyroidism, PCOS, Menopause or chronic stress can slow things down, while others like hyperthyroidism or certain illnesses can speed it up. If you’re dealing with a health situation that affects metabolism, the usual rules might not apply, and getting the right medical support is key.

Lower your calories with more protein
This morning, I woke up unusually hungry—something that doesn’t happen to me often. Yesterday, I had a big high-carb dinner, but I don’t think I hit my protein goal. And sure enough, here I am, craving food right after waking up. It made me realise just how important protein is for keeping hunger at bay. When you load up on carbs but fall short on protein, your body doesn’t get the satiety signals it needs, so you end up feeling hungry sooner than expected. Protein helps regulate your blood sugar and keeps you feeling fuller for longer, preventing those insulin spikes and drops that can lead to cravings. If you're active, aim for around 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight, and if you're less active, somewhere between 0.8 -1 gram per kilogram of body weight should do the trick. The key is to eat when you're truly hungry, not just out of routine.
HEALTH HACK
Exercise snacks
Think you need a full-blown workout to stay fit? Think again. Exercise snacks are short bursts of movement throughout the day are an easy way to keep your brain sharp and your body energised. The science says even a minute of movement can boost circulation, improve focus, and keep you feeling fresh.
Lately the office staff and myself have been going outside a couple times a day with a skipping rope to jump around for 5 minutes. Yes we look weird. Yes we get more work done doing it.
